The Savage Garden - Peter D'Amato has been raising carnivorous plants for over thirty years. He has a nursery called California Carnivores in which he grows the world's largest collection of carnivorous plants. D'Amato knows just about everything when it comes to growing these interesting plants. In his book he shares this knowledge with others who want to grow carnivorous plants both indoors and out. He explains about correct watering and soil PH, light requirements and provides instructions on propagating the different carnivores.

Adrian Slack's, Carnivorous Plants, is a worldwide tour of the different carnivorous plant varieties. Using photographs and line drawings he presents the history, habitat, methods of capturing prey and cultivation of almost fifty carnivorous plants. A carnivore lover's definitive reference book.

Donald Schnell is a naturalist who has dedicated over forty years to the study of carnivorous plants. His work, Carnivorous Plants of the United States and Canada, is a study of 45 species and numerous hybrids. In addition to being a superb field guide, his book provides detailed instructions for preparing the proper environment for growing a variety of carnivorous plants.

In Gardening With Carnivores, Nick Romanowski has written a book dedicated to the North American pitcher plant(Sarracenia) which are among the most spectacular carnivorous plants. He also says they are among the easiest to grow outdoors from parts of southern Canada to the cooler subtropics.

This book is a complete guide to these plants. It deals with their history, hybridization, making a bog garden, and using the pitchers as a long-lasting cut flower. It discusses the biology and evolution of the Saracenia and the book is loaded with beautiful photographs showing the different varieties in their full glory.

Florists are expressing a growiong interest in the Sarracenia for their cut pitchers to use in arrangements and the final section of this book describes how to produce them for sale.


Elizabite, by H.A. Rey, the author of Curious George, is a wonderful children's story about a very unusual carnivorous plant who lets nothing stand in the way of her appetite. Elizabite starts out as a very misunderstood creature and then as the story progresses with magical music and rhymes, she becomes a beloved hero.

This is an exciting read-a-long book for early readers that teaches the value of diversity while intertaining.


Meat-Eating Plants (Weird & Wacky Science) by Nathan Aaseng, is an intertaining and instructional book that describes the upsidedown world of carnivorous plants and how the normal foodchain just doesn't apply to them. Lots of great photographs.

Reading ages 9-12.


In Plants Bite Back, Richard Platt tells children, "There are plants that prickle, sting, or even munch insects for lunch! So, never bite a strange plant -- it might bite back!". Platt presents the carnivorous plant instructionally and with humor. He also discusses other stinging and poisonous plants. Great book to get children interested in carnivorous plants.

Written for grades 2-3 with about 50/50 pictures to words.
